Happy Black Girl Day: Friends

Happy Black Girl Day!

These months area just flying by, right? It seems like just yesterday we were all at Lounge of Three here in DC celebrating together. Eating and drinking, talking and laughing, enjoying music and dancing and making new friends.

Friends.

There is a terrible stereotype about women that says  we can’t get along, that we can’t truly be friends. The bad part about it is a whole bunch of us perpetuate this foolishness by saying “I can’t stand other women. I’d rather have all male friends”, and then going out of our way to live in it. This not our truth, ladies.

We are meant to live together, to support each other, to celebrate each other. This is our history, it is our now and it is indeed our future. It is what has always gotten us over and through. We make it through life’s everyday little steps because a sister-woman-friend somewhere in time and space cared about us.

Cherish and embrace your woman friends. Dedicate yourselves to making it work. Be truthful and honest in word and deed, even in the times of conflict that will always come up. These are opportunities for growth as well. I know my life has been forever made better because of the relationships I’ve cultivated with other women.

Happy Black Girl Day!

If you’re in the DC area, this month’s Happy Black Girl Day Happy Hour will be at Queen Makeda, 1917 U Street, NW. Click here for the Facebook invitation. There will be a drawing for a pair of earrings from Rachel Stewart Jewelry and a Natural Hair presentation by Risikat Okedeyi. I hope you can make it!

****UPDATE****

One of my Twitter followers and fellow blogger Wil! (click here for her blog, “All Is Rosey and Grey”) suggested this song by Stevie Wonder as the theme song for Happy Black Girl this month. It’s “Ebony Eyes” from his 1976 masterpiece, Songs In The Key of Life. Enjoy!

July’s Happy Black Girl Day Recap

I just wanted to say thank you to all the lovely people who were able to join me for the 2nd monthly installment of the Happy Black Girl Happy Hour here in DC. We all had a great time at Lounge of Three. Friends from the first Happy Black Girl Day event last month came out and there were plenty of people there for the very first time. It was so much fun when folks showed and greeted everybody by proclaiming “Happy Black Girl Day!” There were even ladies and gentlemen there who had never even heard of Happy Black Girl Day, but I played the dutiful ambassador/gracious hostess and explained it all. Happy Black Girl Day gained a few new fans last week!

Here are a few of the best pics from the event:

Ms. Dailey always shows up & supports DPT events. Thanks!

I hope other women in other cities are organizing events for Happy Black Girl Day, no matter how small. Just a few friends together for drinks, a game night or just a night in enjoying each other’s company is celebration enough. Next month, Happy Black Girl Day falls on August 11. I’d love it if I were able to feature a write-up or pics from another group in another city. Let’s make that happen!

Thanks again to Lounge of Three (Simon, Jeri, Maiya), Nick The 1Da, the DJ and everybody who showed up and enjoyed themselves. See you next month!

Happy Black Girl Day: Choice & Responsibility

Never lay the responsibility of your happiness in the laps of the ones you love. It will only breed resentment. You will resent them for never being able to come through to your quirky specifics and they’ll resent you for never being satisfied enough.

I’ve lived by this mantra for a few years. I want to be happy, and I think that’s my own responsibility. I don’t think it’s right to burden my loved ones with the particulars of my happiness. Nobody can do for me like I truly need. I mean, they can try and I’ll love and appreciate them for the effort. At the end of it all, only am I aware of the intrinsic nature of my happiness. Human beings are flawed. Our very nature leads to disappointment. The last thing I think any of us should be doing is charging others with the job of bring us joy.

What I can do is choose to be happy with whatever situation or person I find myself. If it’s not working, I choose to change it. Taking responsibility for one’s self is very empowering. I’m not saying that any of us can make it in this life alone. That’s just not true. But I think when we deal with our own stuff properly, we can do a better job at helping those around us. You know how when you take a plane ride and the flight attendants tell you in the event of an emergency, put your own oxygen mask on before you attempt to help your seat mate? Yeah…it’s like that.

Tend to your own heart because it will enable you to love longer, better and stronger.

Happy Black Girl Day!!

Happy Black Girl Day's DC Happy Hour: A Recap

I just wanted to share all the greatness that was the Inaugural Happy Black Girl Day Event. Last week, I decided to take the awesomeness of Happy Black Girl Day offline and into our shared reality. I was so happy to host lovely friends at the quaint little Mocha Lounge here in DC. We all gathered in womanly strength and love, welcoming each other and others (white folks and men!!) to chat, imbibe and snack in celebration with us. It was such a good day to be a Happy Black Girl in DC!

We had a grand time! Special thanks to Rachel Stewart for providing a lovely jewelry prize and to Darnell, the proprietor of Mocha Lounge for providing a beautiful and cozy venue for our event. I hope to see more Happy Black Girls have celebratory gatherings in cities all over. Never-ending thanks to Sister Toldja of www.thebeautifulstruggler.com for creating Happy Black Girl Day!!  I am working on the next Happy Black Girl Day event in DC and of course all are welcome! Details to come, but in the meantime Be Happy!
