Dirty Pretty Movie Madness: The Skinny on Patrik-Ian Polk’s Film, “The Skinny”

This past Friday, I had the honor & privilege of attending the premiere of Patrik-Ian Polk’s new feature length film, The Skinny. Y’all know who Patrik-Ian Polk is…he created “Noah’s ARC” for goodness sake! I’m a huge fan! He’s also my birthday twin #729 #Leo! Little did Mr.Polk’s PR folks know that they were ending my 27-month movie theater hiatus when they invited me to come out and watch the movie. Yes, that’s more than TWO YEARS…but “The Skinny” was well worth the wait! I got myself together in grand fashion (I wore heels which y’all know I hate) and headed on down to the Landmark E Street Cinema to see the film. I got there late (of course) so I ended up sitting on the VERY FIRST ROW between two of my lovely friends from Twitter, Bassey Ikpi & Pam’s Kid.

But lemme tell y’all about the movie:

The Skinny is a story about five friends who graduated from Brown University having a great mini-reunion weekend together. There were 4 guys and a lady: Sebastian (Blake Young-Fountain) , Magnus (Jussie Smollett), Kyle (Anthony Burrell), Joey (Jeffery Bowyer-Chapman) and Langston (Shanika Warren-Markland)- all Black, beautiful and gay.

The gorgeous and talented cast of Patrik-Ian Polk's film, The Skinny.

You could tell that they all had a genuine affection for one another and were looking forward to enjoying an exciting and fun weekend together in the city. Everything started out cool with drinks, dancing and laughs until some real gutter-type activities, perpetrated by Magnus’ significant other were revealed. From that point on, all kinds of scandal and urbane adventures popped off and I LOVED IT. Good stuff happened to good people and bad stuff happened to good people. Good people made some bad decisions and I even got misty on a few scenes, and umm…“stimulated and aware” on others. Important subjects that effect ALL of us (not just the LGBT community) were addressed in the film, but not in a way that would make you feel uncomfortable: drugs, safe sex, date rape, HIV prevention and treatment as well as love and relationships. These characters were written in a way that made me really care about what happened to them. I cared so much that I, in classic Black Girl fashion, found myself talking to the screen and telling them what and what not to do when I felt them heading for trouble! LOL!

I was sitting next to Bassey, so when her cameo scene came on the screen, I started poking her in the arm and whispering “You look beautiful!” because she really did. I also enjoyed seeing actors from Mr.Polk’s other work pop up in the movie: Darryl Stephens (Noah from “Noah’s ARC” #Swoon), Seth Gilliam (“Punks”) and Wilson Cruz (Genito, also from “Noah’s ARC”). And I could never forget my instant glee when I saw B.Scott’s scene-stealing self up on the screen making a gorgeous film debut. The green eyeshadow was POPPIN’!! Yeah, I got kinda excited about that eyeshadow.

“The Skinny” was beautiful to look at, it was sexy and it was very smart. Patrik-Ian Polk deserves all the support and accolades hes has received and will receive for his newest work. The cast was amazing and the writing was great. This is a film that a.) I will definitely go see again and b.) add to my collection once it comes to DVD. And guess what else? All those great songs in the movie were by Patrik Ian-Polk! All that talent in one man…color me a beautiful brown shade of “Impressed”! I gotta get that soundtrack too because the music was as awesome as the movie was.

Thank you again to Patrik-Ian Polk’s PR team for the gracious invitation to see The Skinny. I hope that when the film makes its way to your city, you are able to get out to see it. If you happen to be in the DC-Metro Area, The Skinny will be showing at the Landmark E Street Cinema through April 12th, 2012.

Empowering The Pretty Brown Girl: I’m Not The Only PBG!!

Hello My Lovelies!

I just wanted to pass on this very important information that I received via email from the great folks at the Pretty Brown Girl brand…

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “Girl, they have your name!” They do and when they contacted me, I thought they found me through a Google Alert wanted to sue me! I prayed to Jesus “PLEASE DON’T LET THESE GOOD BLACK FOLKS SUE ME!!” I certainly did ask them if they wanted to sue me over the “Pretty Brown Girl” moniker. Oh Lord, I would’ve been devastated! I’ve been using this “PBG” thing since 2006 on MySpace. But they assured me they didn’t want to sue me. They only wanted to see if I minded passing on the Good News about this adorable doll they’ve come up with to help their little daughters and Brown Girls everywhere embrace and celebrate being Pretty Brown Girls.

They didn’t have to ask me twice about that! They sent me this video to share. I love the story and concept behind the Pretty Brown Girl brand:

Pretty Brown Girl Brand Created by Metro Detroit Couple: MyFoxDETROIT.com

Real talk, Little Black Girls need this. Girls of Color need this. When everything around them is telling that what they are ISN’T beautiful, it is up to us to tell our girls that what they are is absolutely beautiful and they should always be proud. I applaud Sheri and Corey Crawley for doing just that for their girls and now, ALL the Girls of Color with this doll and all that goes along with it.

There will be an OFFICIAL Pretty Brown Girl Day on Saturday, February 25, 2012, celebrating the beauty and awesomeness of little girls of color! If you love a Pretty Brown Girl, take time out to tell how great they are. Go to the Pretty Brown Girl website and check out their pledge of empowerment and buy some of the merchandise-T-shirts, doll, bags, umbrellas. All of that neat stuff!

Yes, I do see that Mama and the girls have straightened hair and I can admit that it DID activate my Side-Eye, but I won’t let that damper my enthusiasm for this brand. At least the doll has tight curly hair, right? And I STILL hope they don’t sue me!! LOL!

Fat Girl Fairytales: The Amazing Transformation of Jennifer Hudson

Can we talk about Jennifer Hudson being in cahoots with those “diet” people over at Weight Watchers to make people think that FAT=HORRIBLE & TACKY? Yes, let’s do that. I’ve been meaning to rant about this for at least a week. I’m about sick and tired of seeing Jennifer Hudson in these awful TV ads for Weight Watchers. She’s been wailing like a newly-freed slave for those Weight Watchers coins ever since she gave birth to her son. Weight Watchers apparently thinks that not only is Jennifer Hudson is of, at least, mediocre intellect, that the rest of us fat-ass [Black] women watching TV are as well. While all of Jennifer’s Weight Watchers commercials have rubbed me the wrong way in general, I have to say this one here is the one that REALLY makes me wanna slap the wig off of somebody’s head:

In this ad, the Fat and Tacky Jennifer in the ugly dress and cheap curly weave that we all remember from American Idol is singing “I Believe In You and Me” (The Antebellum mix by DJ Toby Kinte From the “Give Us Us Free mixtape) and out of the shadows comes present day, New and Improved Jennifer Hudson in a fabulous dress, bone straight, high quality weave hair and of course 100lbs lighter (or whatever it is that she lost). New and Improved Jennifer goes on to do a duet with Fat and Tacky Jennifer that only sounds like two Black Baptist Girls fighting for a solo, all in the name of convincing us to lose weight. OK, cool. Whatever.

Have a damn seat.

Have a damn seat.

But I find this commercial most disturbing because most of us understand that Old and Tacky Jennifer didn’t have the same access  [read :money] to the things/practices/procedures that made New and Improved Jennifer able to look the way that she does now. Let’s pretend that New and Improved Jennifer never lost the weight. Here’s what you have:

This Jennifer won the Grammy, Golden Globe & Oscar. New & Improved Jennifer ain't doing shyt but singing for Weight Watchers.

There are a couple of things I need Weight Watchers to stop trying to telling us using Jennifer Hudson, a beautiful, rich Black woman, to do it:

Stop telling us there is something inherently wrong with Fat Bodies. There isn’t. This isn’t about how much anyone cares about fat women’s health, because they really don’t. This is about playing into the insecurities of women who have been lead to believe that skinny = best-thing-on-Earth-and-if-you’re-not-you-are-ugly/sick/undesirable. For profit. Everybody should know by now that “fat” doesn’t necessarily equal “unhealthy”. Body policing and fat shaming needs to die in these mean American Streets.

Stop telling us through these awful commercials that tired ass “This could be you story”. The average woman (who is a size 12/14, by the way) is not going to be able to transform like Jennifer did without Jennifer’s funds. And those funds came to be via the success she enjoyed with her Fat Body.

Quite frankly, I’d respect Jennifer more if she were doing ads for hair weave, makeup and body shapers. That’s a more accurate depiction of who she “is” now.

Happy New Year: Living & Loving in 3D In 2012

Happy New Year Dedicated Readers!!

I hope you all made it to 2012 with heads held up high and your personal standards intact. As for me, I certainly did and I know I’m a blessed and HIGHLY FAVORED woman because of it. Haleloo…that certainly isn’t everybody’s testimony.

It was my awesome New Year’s experience that lead me to this particular post. I feel like I just have to talk to My People about our online relationships. Our eFriendships, if you will. If you’re reading this blog, I would venture to say you have friendships that so far, are only cultivated and maintained over the Internet. In 2012, I want you to try to take at least ONE of those relationships offline. Make your eFriends, your 3D Friends!

I spent the New Year’s weekend with friends that I made online. We had a great time eating, drinking and being merry. We had a wonderful warm toast to love and prosperity at midnight. It was awesome! On New Year’s Day,  I ended up at a dinner party with a bunch of older beautiful Black women (and men). As I sat and talked and listened to them, I felt like I was being bathed in wisdom.

Side note: Oh, yes. That food was the BOMB dot COM. Can you believe I actually tried not to eat because it was first time meeting those folks. I gave that up REAL QUICK when I tasted those greens! LAWD!! Heavenly is what they were! I’m mad I didn’t bring a plate home with me.

There’s something to be said about being in the physical presence of friends and absorbing the energy that you already know is there. As much as I love these Internets, there is nothing like unplugging for a while and meeting up. It’s very life-affirming and makes me feel “real”. It makes me feel a lot more connected than Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and other social media platforms ever have. While I thank Former Vice President Al Gore for inventing the Internet (what, y’all ain’t know that? learn yourselves some knowledge this year), I really don’t want to depend on technology to build the realness of the Love that I carry into my friendships. It’s reasonable support but if you really mean what you say, then you will have to live in 3D with your Loves.

I challenge My Dedicated Readers to take at least ONE of your online friendships into the physical world in 2012.

I know it can be scary, but brave (and smart, of course) and do it anyway. I can speak from personal experience that you have more of a chance to make a life-long friend than meeting some lyin’ ass Internet Creeper. Would I lie to My People?? Nawl.

  • Have you made any cool friends on the Internet?
  • Met any azzholes or creeps?
  • How do you feel about meeting folks you meet online?
