Living For The Weekend: Natural Hair Expo and A Spa Party

I haven’t posted too much this week, but I just wanted to end the week on Dirty Pretty Thangs by informing all my DC area people of two events I’m excited to be attending this weekend.

First, DC’s 6th Annual Love, Locs and Natural Hair Expo presented by Asaze Natural Hair will be held tomorrow.

Here’s some info I got from DC Natural Hair Examiner, Laquita Thomas-Banks:

DC’s 6th Annual Love, Locs and Natural Hair Expo presented by Asaze Natural Hair will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 11 am to 7 pm at the Mary Virginia Merrick Center, located on 4275 Sixth Street, SE Washington, DC (across from the parking lot of Saint Thomas Moore Church). The expo entry fee is $10, which covers all workshops, classes, and a fabulous hair show.

Click here for the full article and all the information on what I hope will be an incredible natural hair event in DC.

I was invited to a Spa Party being hosted by Afiya4You on Sunday:

Join us Sunday April 17th for our Love, Laugh, Live Spa Party in Silver Spring, MD. You’ll be able to receive mini facials, hand treatments, win prizes and purchase products at a special spa discount.

I’m looking forward to joining the ladies of Afiya4You this coming Sunday for an afternoon of FREE pampering and discounted shopping of their fabulous natural products (yes, I’ve already sampled a few!) Click the picture for more details.

The weather promises to be nice and I look forward to getting out and enjoying some of what my city has to offer to local Naturalistas.

What’s going on in your world this weekend??

Red Tent Symposium For Women: “Problem-Solving Outside of The Framework” March 25-26, 2011

Hello My Lovelies!

Yes, yes. I know. I’ve been totally M.I.A. on the blogging scene since Dirty Pretty Thangs was cured of The Cholera and reborn in it’s beautifully human present state (thanks to Luvvie and Alise). I’m way too scattered to come up with a plausible excuse for my lack of posts, so let’s just move to more important matters…

On March 25-26, 2011 LiL SoSo Productions will be hosting The Red Tent Symposium For Women. March is Women’s History Month, so holding a gathering focused on the exchange of knowledge to move toward solving many of the issues facing the 21st century woman is more than apropos. I am a member of the dynamic planning committee that is working hard to put this event together and I am also serving as a speaker on one of the panels. Check out the details below:

From www.lilsoso.com:

The Red Tent Symposium for Women is a day and a half exchange centered on the needs of women.  Based on the novel The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, the red tent symbolizes a sacred and safe space where women can exchange ideas and insights. This short, information-packed symposium will feature panels that are designed to deal with the pressing and sometimes unpleasant issues faced by many women of the modern age. For the spring session, the theme is”Problem Solving Outside of the Framework”.  The presentations will tackle the “framework”; that is, the societal traditions which seek to restrict expressions of our womanhood. This iteration of the Red Tent Symposium will address topics of a personal nature, and will highlight women who have found ways to make things work, by using creative techniques and approaches to common challenges within 21st-century womanhood.

The subject matter will cover topics such as the importance women centered friendships, balancing family, relationships and career, loving and honoring the body  and how to know when to seek help and support. The energy surrounding this event is already swirling and lifting women up! Besides being very excited about the knowledge that I will gain from this event, I am honored to be one of the women working to make this an awesome event. The personal and professional growth that I’m gaining from the planning experience alone has proven to be invaluable already.

I am encouraging every woman within 4 hours driving distance of Washington, D.C. to register and attend The Red Tent Symposium. Grab your homegirls, register and road trip! Make an uplifting first weekend of spring of it all! It is a small fee for one of the most incredible information exchanges you will experience. There are registration rates for students, for mothers/aunts/mentors to bring teen girls age 13-17 and for women who would like to register and attend together. Follow this link to www.lilsoso.com and read more details about the planned panel discussions and to register.

The Red Tent Symposium For Women has both a [closed] Facebook group and a Twitter account, in order to get all the women in The Tent, despite our geographical boundaries. Ladies, be sure to follow them both.

Men, while The Red Tent is a sacred place for women only,  you can support by passing the word along to the women in your life.

MASTER OF THE MIX VIEWING PARTY LAUNCH: PARTY ROCKERS INVADES DC!!

Hello My Lovelies!!

Alright, remember when I said I’ve been blogging all sparsely and off-schedule? Well, here’s why…I’ve been working feverishly with Sister Goddesses Kat of LilSoSo Productions (I’m her official Administrative Assistant), Candice of CandicNicolePR and Alexis of Madison Davenport Ink, along with my homegirl Kellie, our volunteer coordinator, on this funky, fresh and FLY event for Smirnoff’s Master of The Mix DJ Reality show, airing on Centric/BET. The first show is November 3 and we’re hosting a coinciding Launch event here in the Capital City! Check out the official get-down after the video:

Now, what we are doing here in DC is just about the dopest series of events surrounding the Smirnoff Master of the Mix Show:

November 3, 2010

“Master of the Mix”, the new reality show sponsored by Smirnoff, will feature seven DJs who face weekly competition until only one master of the mix remains. Featuring Just Blaze as host and Kid Capri as the celebrity judge, the show will air Wednesdays on Centric at 10:30pm and on Saturdays at 12 midnight on BET.Check out the DJs, clips and more at: www.masterofthemix.com.

To commemorate this groundbreaking effort, Lil SoSo Productions and Smirnoff have teamed up for a series of events including the launch of the premiere episode. Join us as we celebrate Smirnoff’s nod to DJ culture on Wednesday, November 3rd.

Attendees will get to nosh on great food, sip Smirnoff cocktails (limited time and while supplies last), try their hands at djing, take in a documentary or two, and watch the premiere episode of “Master of the Mix” on Centric at 10:30pm

The night will also feature just a few of DC’s own well-known party rockers
throughout the night:

DJ Stylus, “The Vibe Conductor”, DJ Jahsonic, DJ Book, DJ Dredd, Adrian Loving and DJ RBI

** Live painting by: Aniekan**

LUX LOUNGE | 649 New York Ave, NW WDC | 8PM | 21+

**After the launch, join DJ Stylus, more special guest DJs, and a host of community partners every Wednesday for weekly viewing parties scheduled throughout the city. Another great addition to the “Master of the Mix” Event Series is that LiL SoSo Productions is partnering with CityLife Card to introduce a new savvy way to RSVP for these events. By downloading a digital card, attendees will be able to bypass the RSVP line, in an E-Z pass like fashion. LiL SoSo Productions is the first company to try this new service. When asked, Risikat “Kat” Okedeyi; who is the producer of the “Master of the Mix” Event Series in DC states “We are very excited about the event series. Not only are we hopeful that “Master of the Mix” will shed light on DJ culture, but the multiple events give LSP a chance to include area DJs and various Creatives into the mix. DC’s creative community has so much to offer, and Smirnoff has been integral in helping us highlight just a few of the many talented folks in the area.” (For more details visit Press release by Candice NicolePR)

If you are anywhere NEAR DC in the next several weeks, you need to hit up at least a few of these parties. The launch event this Wednesday will be INCREDIBLE!! You don’t want to miss that. And simply one word for the finale at the end of December:

DOPE-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!!!

So, I made it up. I had to make it up. There simply isn’t a word in the English language that would suffice for the awesomeness of this show and the DC parties that will be featuring it. Either be there or hear about it from your friends later…and be envious!

Ok,Ok, don’t be envious. Just go pick up some Smirnoff, tune into Centric on Wednesday nights at 10:30pm or BET on Saturday at midnight and sip and watch it at home. Remember…Drink Responsibly, My Lovelies.
