I Feel Like Sangin’!: Double G Karaoke 2nd Anniversary Celebration at Lounge of III

For all of My Lovelies that are here in DC with me, tonight is a very special night at one of my favorite hang-out spots!

Double G Karaoke will be celebrating two years of hosting Tuesday Karaoke Night at Lounge of III. As a regular from the very beginning, I can’t be more excited to attend this celebration and slay the crowd with my…umm…errr…UNIQUE song stylings! There will be drink specials (as always), door prizes, games and just a fun time for all. I hope that my Dedicated Readers that are here in the DC area can attend.

My friend Eric & I singing at my Karaoke Birthday Party a few weeks ago

The very first time I did karaoke was about 10 years ago when I was on vacation in Virginia Beach. I performed “All Cried Out” (the Allure/112 version) with a friend of a friend and I LOVED it. I never did karaoke again until two years ago when Greg of Double G Karaoke started hosting at Lounge of III on Tuesday nights. I wasn’t sure how I would do performing since it had been so long since the last time I had rocked the karaoke mic. I’m telling you, it was like riding a bike. I LOVED IT!! I get up in front of people to perform and really break out. I’m practically a natural. I never let the fact that outside of playing an instrument, I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket stop me from singing my heart out. I’ve done “Meeting In The Ladies Room” by Klymaxx,  “Single Ladies” by Beyonce, “Raspberry Beret”, “Darling Nikki” and “Little Red Corvette” by Prince,  and quite a few Madonna songs as well. Check out this video of me  performing “Ray of Light” at an early Double G Karaoke Night at Lounge of III:

Epic, right?

There is practically no limit as to what you can choose to sing since Double G features song books with thousands of songs from every genre imaginable.

Click here to RSVP to the Facebook invitation to the Double G Karaoke Anniversary Party at Lounge of III. Lounge of III is located at 1013 U Street, NW Washington, DC. Take Metro to U Street/Cardozo/AfAm Civil War Memorial (Green Line) or park on the street, if you dare. The festivities begin at 7pm! I hope to see you there!

Any of you folks love karaoke as much as I do? If so, what’s your signature song? If not…WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?? Karaoke is GREAT!! LOL!!!

Naturalista Meet-Up: My Very First Visit To The Oyin Handmade Store

Last Saturday, my good friend and brand new Naturalista Lauren of Life of A Libra and I went up the road a ways to the city of Baltimore for a Natural Hair Meet-Up. The meet-up was organized by some ladies in Maryland that are members of the Baltimore Natural Hair Meet-Up group and the CurlyNikki Forums. I’m not a member of either (well, I’m on the CurlyNikki forums now, as ThePBG), but I found out the meet-up from my friend Yonna. The meet-up was held at the Oyin Handmade store in Baltimore. Yonna works there and invited me to come. I jumped at the chance to visit the Oyin store! I was so excited that I got to go and check out the place where some of my favorite natural hair products are thought up and made!

I’ve been a fan of the Oyin Handmade products since before I took my locs down. The products are all natural and made with love. What’s not to like?? I also feel great about supporting a Black family business with my few lil’ dollars, especially since I know that products are top-notch. In addition to picking up a few of my staple products, I got to meet a lot of beautiful Naturalistas and talk hair all afternoon. It was a lovely gathering! Here are a few pics:

Yonna was a great saleswoman/hostess.

Naturalistas sampling products & talking about them.

Checking out more of the Oyin Handmade goodness.

Beautiful Natualistas showing Oyin Handmade products some love.

Product on the shelves at Oyin. Two of my favorites! Burnt Sugar Pomade and Shine n' Define!

Here I am with Alex of www.thegoodhairblog.com. She's such a beauty.

All giddy with my bag of Oyin Handmade goodies.

Group pic! All gorgeous Naturalistas!

The Oyin Handmade Shop is located at 2103 N.Charles Street, Baltimore, MD. It's open on Saturdays only, from 12pm-7pm

We had a blast and I’m so glad I went. Special thanks to Lauren for coming and letting me ride up to Baltimore with her and to the ladies of the CurlyNikki Forums for putting together such a great event. All those beautiful ladies with gorgeous natural hair. It was certainly a day to remember.

Just in case you’re wondering what products I bought: I got the Shine n’ Define, a bottle of Hair Dew, some Honey Water hydrating body mist, a very cool journal for me and a “I Love My Hair” t-shirt for my daughter.

Do you use any of the Oyin Handmade products? If so, which ones are your favorites? If not, check them out and pick up a sample pack. I guarantee there will be something that you love.

Nominated for Best New Blog & Best Personal Blog for The Black Weblog Awards 2011

Oh yes, Dirty Pretty Thangs is on the ballot in TWO categories for this year’s Black Weblog Awards!!

I am so excited about this. I’ve always voted in the Black Weblog Awards but never thought that my blog was good enough to be up there with the likes of my favorites: The Beautiful Struggler, Very Smart Brothers, Soulbounce and AfroBella. But here I am. You can add Dirty Pretty Thangs to that incredible collective. These blogs and the awesome people who run them have been nothing but supportive and encouraging to me in my blogging, so it is an honor to be nominated for a BWA alongside them.

I want to thank EVERYBODY who has supported me in blogging, from my time on MySpace to right now on Dirty Pretty Thangs and all of my blogging incarnations in between. A HUGE shout-out to Luvvie and Alise, my [e]Sisters who not only redesigned my blog, but rescued it from the brink of death when a virus had it down for months. I want to show love to my parents who made me understand that there was nothing wrong with me when I preferred to stay in and read as opposed to going out and playing. Eternal Love to my Grandma who always had something else somewhere for me to read once I had gone through all her Good Housekeeping and Jet magazines. Thank you to J.California Cooper and Bernice L. McFadden, two amazing Black women authors who inspire me daily. I will be forever owe a debt of gratitude to my Junior High School English teacher Ms. Nellie Cook (Jefferson, now) who taught me the most important lessons I’ve ever learned about writing.

My Lovelies, do not hesitate! Go to the Black Weblogs Award site and vote for me! Dirty Pretty Thangs!

Living For The Weekend: Natural Hair Expo and A Spa Party

I haven’t posted too much this week, but I just wanted to end the week on Dirty Pretty Thangs by informing all my DC area people of two events I’m excited to be attending this weekend.

First, DC’s 6th Annual Love, Locs and Natural Hair Expo presented by Asaze Natural Hair will be held tomorrow.

Here’s some info I got from DC Natural Hair Examiner, Laquita Thomas-Banks:

DC’s 6th Annual Love, Locs and Natural Hair Expo presented by Asaze Natural Hair will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 11 am to 7 pm at the Mary Virginia Merrick Center, located on 4275 Sixth Street, SE Washington, DC (across from the parking lot of Saint Thomas Moore Church). The expo entry fee is $10, which covers all workshops, classes, and a fabulous hair show.

Click here for the full article and all the information on what I hope will be an incredible natural hair event in DC.

I was invited to a Spa Party being hosted by Afiya4You on Sunday:

Join us Sunday April 17th for our Love, Laugh, Live Spa Party in Silver Spring, MD. You’ll be able to receive mini facials, hand treatments, win prizes and purchase products at a special spa discount.

I’m looking forward to joining the ladies of Afiya4You this coming Sunday for an afternoon of FREE pampering and discounted shopping of their fabulous natural products (yes, I’ve already sampled a few!) Click the picture for more details.

The weather promises to be nice and I look forward to getting out and enjoying some of what my city has to offer to local Naturalistas.

What’s going on in your world this weekend??
