There was recently an incident out in Seattle, WA where a cop got to tusslin’ with two girls after he attempted to detain them after seeing them jaywalk through a busy thoroughfare. Things got pretty ugly when the girls decided to take on this cop. Bystanders were able to record the goings-on:

According to the various articles I’ve read about this brouhaha, the girl in the black sweater and blue top was 19 years-old and her cousin in the pink top was 17 years-old. It’s obvious that the cop is a white man and the two girls are black.

I saw this video the first time and shook my head. I watched it a second time and rolled my eyes. I watched a THIRD time and got pissed off. And not only with the grown ass man who thought he had to punch a teenage girl in the face to get her under control, but with these two rowdy girls who thought they were so gangsta that they could actually FIGHT THE DAMN POLICE. I’m not ready to throw blame fully on any one side in this situation. From the pettiness of the citation (jaywalking…really?) to the resistance of these young girls to the way the cop was physically handling them, it’s a complete clusterf*ck.

The girls were wrong for jaywalking. The cop was well within his rights and duties to give them a citation for that. I don’t know where it went from a simple citation to him having to put his hands on them, but once the cop said “put your hands behind your back” to put those cuffs on, that was NOT a cue for Miss Thang to start acting up, no matter how unfair she thought the situation was. That was a very unsafe thing for her to do, because people have been murdered by police for less. I suspect her rowdiness gave her younger cousin the cue to start to huffin’ and puffin’ too, because something told her that SHE would be the one to save her cousin from the Big Bad Police Officer. And YES, she did grab that cop by the arm, screaming and trying to pull him off her cousin (despite the crowd’s insistence that she didn’t). Then “POW!!!” Right in the kisser.

That’s where my pisstivity with the cop comes in. There was no real reason for him to punch that girl in the face like that. Yes, she needed her ass sat the hell down/detained/restrained, but I think the LAST thing a grown man needs to do to get the desired result from a woman is punch her square in her face. Indeed, she was acting a complete fool out there, but that punch was unnecessary. I am certain of 2 things: a.) if either of those girls had been white, they wouldn’t have been manhandled like that and b.) if there hadn’t been a crowd of onlookers there making video and taking pictures, one or both of those girls would have gotten shot and possibly killed out there.

These two girls are going to certainly catch some charges. I doubt if the officer suffers any real consequences, but he needs more training because there is no way a couple of teenagers should have been able to give him that much trouble, a couple of girls at that! What the hell???

I would never, EVER attempt to fight a police officer. I don’t know about anybody else, but I was taught that’s suicide. If I feel like I’m being unjustly detained, I’d just have to go through the system and pray for whatever was going down to be in front of a whole bunch of witnesses. Witnesses with camera phones. There is too much history of police officers not giving a damn about the lives of Black people in America. It’s been open season on us for a very long time when it comes to cops. No need to be stupid and poke the damn bear with a stick.

Because I know in Southern VA, you even attempt to touch a police officer, they’re shooting first, forget the questions later.

Even the the video doesn’t give us the whole story from the beginning, there is enough there to see that one side of this situation can’t carry all the blame. The cop was incompetent and the girls were out of control and dead ass wrong.

i used to live in Seattle and I know that section REALLY well. Seattle PD doesn’t play around when it comes to jaywalking because there’s a SERIOUS abundance of crosswalks and overpasses throughout the city so nobody has to do that. that particular intersection is laid out like a Y. i’ve seen plenty of accidents caused because of people jaywalking when the crosswalk is literally 5-10 feet away.

yes, that girl got her face rocked by a cop. and yes, that girl jaywalked AND put her hands on a cop. the video from the phone starts when the cop is shown trying to restrain her for whatever reason. we don’t know the reason that the cop was trying to restrain her in the first place. for all we know, when she was stopped and the cop was trying to give her a citation, she could have said/done something that put him on his guard. when she pushed him, he had no way of knowing if she was going for his gun, or trying to stab him, or whatever…that’s cop training. it was a 2 on 1 situation. cops are trained to deal with threatening/violent situations accordingly…regardless of its male or female. african, samoan, polish, italian, irish, russian, tongan, mexican..whatever.

like i said before, the video starts late into the situation and we don’t know WHY he was trying to restrain her. and the way it looked before that chick got yapped in the face, he was trying to restrain her WITHOUT hurting her. and even AFTER the face punch…there was STILL resistance to the restraint. plus those ghetto ass Seattle kids are MAD disrespectful to EVERYONE, not just police.

I tend to agree with most of your comment. The cop didn’t know what that girl was going for when she came for him. He had to restrain her. He had to restrain them both because they were wildin’ the hell out. But I still contend that the punch in the face was too much. He’s a grown ass man…a police officer. There had to have been another way to sit her ass down.

he could have tazed her, pep sprayed her, footswept her..whatever. no matter what he tried to do, people would still cry in outrage because the FIRST thing they see is white hitting black. then cop hitting minority. then man hitting woman. seattle pd have to deal with angry ass samoans and tongans…they get special training for that shit. if i was him, i would have rocked her monkey ass too.

Exactly. people are crazy these days, the gall of their attitudes is what put me off the most. I know police get a bad rep–most of it is deserved, but sheesh! I would never do that now as an adult, and as a youth?! It is just unfathomable for me to talk back to adults like that, let alone police officers.

I grew up with a healthy fear of white men in a uniform. There is no way that I, as a teenager in the 80s and 90s would ever have thought to buck at a cop. There’s no way I’d do it today! Even if I wasn’t wrong, it’s not enough of an issue to risk my life over.

I typically support a good face punch and really, she had that sh*t coming, but he should not have done it all the same. He should be appropriately punished for that.

But what’s going on in our society that we don’t teach our kids that you don’t fight the damn police? This is not a brawl at your high school, boo. This is THE LAW. And he may be wrong, he may be dirty, he may be an asshole, but he also has the authority to carry you all the way down to the jailhouse and put you in it. Keep messing with him and he might bury you up under it.

The dirty irresponsible types don’t hesitate to shoot to kill, as we’ve seen. Don’t get shot over some bullsh*t. That’s basic.

I helped facilitate a roundtable with a class of 11th graders. These were some smart kids so I was surprised at the way they went off when we got on the subject of “respect.”

“You got to give it to get it…” was the refrain and the explanation for why having gone off on their English teacher (who was gone at the time) was acceptable. I asked them, “well who gives it first?” ::crickets::

I don’t know where these kids nowadays get this idea that they are entitled to so much respect “just because”. Really, who the f*ck are you? They don’t see that they should give respect regardless.

I have a 16 year-old and an 11 year-old and what I have drilled in their heads since they were big enough to understand is that no matter what, it is more important to be on the side of right than it is to be right.

You can’t eat pride, and you sure can’t live off it.

You know I watched this with my husband yesterday, unfortunately one of those girls hit that man in the face first. Now if they were my children, I would bust their asses, because where is the damn home training? Seriously, you going to act like a natural damn fool and get knocked in your face over jaywalking? Now what would have been a simple fine has turned into some charges.

I wonder how their family is going to handle this. Will it be with way more class & grace than these two demonstrated? Will they act a fool and show the world where these girls obtained their behaviors?

I also wonder if the cop (who clearly reacted out of anger instead of logic) will be properly reprimanded by his fellow officers for punching a 17 year old girl? Will his family shake their heads in disappointment?

The police officer handled the situation as if he were in a street fight. I heard an officer explain that they are trained to use the least amount of force which in this case probably would have been a good shot of pepper spray. I understand he is human, but he has had training and if he can’t follow procedure he needs to get a new job or go back to training. As a teacher sometimes I feel myself wanting to shake the ‘ish out of my students….but my training teaches me other options.

I think it was a bad decision on both parties but the cop definitely needed to have a little more discretion in what he was doing. Also who gets pulled over for Jaywalking?

Oh Hell No..That officer straight hit that girl with hatred in his eyes wasn’t no she could’ve been reaching for his gun nothing,yeah I’m playing the race card ’cause people acting like racism don’t exist anymore,it does its just being supressed if these where two drunk ass white girls talking shit he wouldn’t have been hard pressed to slamming them numorus times on the car just to put cuffs on them Or maybe he would he look like a women beater,In my opinion he is dead wrong as a man and as law inforcer,I mean why he just ain’t call for back up like they do when they can’t obtain a enraged unruly man!..You know ’cause his d**k small and he just could not take a black girl mouthing off to him he already got to deal with his wife amber getting train action from the ups and fedex guy his manhood just couldnt take it!!!
